Main bhi gulabi , Tu hai gulabi
Din bhi gulabi hai gulabi ye kehar……..
Jaane re jaane mann jaane hai
Rang, rang gulabi hai preet ro
— Jaideep Sahni, Shuddh Desi Romance
So go the lyrics of a recent Bollywood number ( No, this isn’t a promotional blog of the film! )
Pink, the colour of love huh? Wait, wasn’t it red?? Oh darn! I don’t think I can ever get a knack of these colour-stereotypes
Blue is for sadness, black for death, green for envy and red for rage. Have you ever used your “grey” matter to figure out why or how these colours gained their respective reputations? What did blue ever do to anyone that it came to signify depression? One of the biggest injustices of his/her colour life! Even more puzzling is the stereotyping of colours according to gender. Pink being the epitome of girliness and blue reserved for the boys. ( No complaints with the band Blue though…at all! ) Well, Today is the day I raise my voice against colour prejudices!
These stereotypes are everywhere. Remember Sheldon Cooper’s (a.k.a. Jim Parsons of the Big Bang Theory fame) brush with them on an episode?
Rajesh Koothrappali: I was just feeling blue.
Sheldon Cooper: Blue, as in depressed.
Raj: Well, not so much depressed; just lonely.
Sheldon: I don’t know what color lonely is.
Sheldon: Red is angry; yellow is frightened; green is jealous; and blue is depressed. Perhaps, we can assign a color to lonely.
Raj: Nothing rhymes with orange; it’s probably lonely.
Sheldon: Alright. Come in. You look positively orange with loneliness.
A little too much you say? I don’t blame you…I certainly did over-analyse colours and their corresponding emotions with all this hue and cry :P. Whatever be its stereotype, Bubble-gum Pink is my colour of the moment.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
After all has been said
What’s up with this hue?
I really don’t know. Maybe I sub-consciously succumbed to one of these colour prejudices myself! No matter what Bubble-gum Pink is reserved for, I like it 😛 And by the way, If someone knows why some colours started to be associated with certain emotions or the story that brought about these references to popular culture proving that my ramblings have been for naught, ENLIGHTEN ME. I will be indebted to you forever.
Till then, Paint the town Bubble-gum Pink (Sorry Red, No Offence meant!)
