Have you ever found yourself in the grip of a craze ? A temporary infatuation for something.
A fashion trend, a new restaurant, a hobby / pursuit, some kind of amusement or even a product on the shelves. Sometimes it last for months while other times it disappears faster than it appeared. During the short time we’re engulfed by it, what really happens ? In this post we have tried to break down the various phases of a CRAZE !
Phase 1 – LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
Something we like to call the “A child with a new toy” Syndrome. We become like a child who sees a new toy.
Its New ! Its Shiny ! We want it !
It can be an item of clothing, a new restaurant everyone is talking about, learning the violin, strobing, eating quinoa or watching that new play. We are so excited to discover something amazing and can’t wait to include it in our routine.
Phase 2 – ADOPTION
With a lot of enthusiasm we set out to embrace this new craze in our lives. We procure the necessary items and carve out time for it. We don’t mind going the extra mile, heck it doesn’t even feel like work. Motivation is aplenty and the rudimentary elements are understood. Everything happens quickly, our good friend Procrastination is absent.
Phase 3 – MANIA
In this phase, our love for the craze is at its peak. We are obsessed with one thing and one thing only ! Sacrificing normal duties or even sleep over it is quite common. If it is a new TV series we are infatuated with; we watch reruns, buy merchandise / memorabilia and begin to believe the characters shown are real. If it is a new song, we hear it on a loop until the lyrics are etched in our mind. A new dish ? Eaten every day of the week ! Painting ? Several uninterrupted hours spent creating a masterpiece !
Phase 4 – FLAUNTING
The virtues of the craze are extolled to all and sundry. Our social media handles are flooded with images and links related to our fleeting passion. It is spoken about every chance we get.
Phase 5 – BOREDOM
Phases three and four can last for a day, a fortnight or even a couple of weeks. Eventually though, boredom sets in. Enthusiasm levels normalise and we do not feel the same amount of pleasure we did in the beginning. Too much of anything is bad right ?
Phase 6 – WITHDRAWAL
The infatuation gradually ebbs away, the frequency with which we indulge in our craze reduces everyday. We do not give it all our time, are not as excited as before and slowly but surely go back to our usual pre-craze routine.
Phase 7 – INDIFFERENCE
The last phase is where we do not care about the fad in the least. We are completely over our transient passion. It is no longer a central part of our everyday lives, we do not forget to eat or sleep because of it. We’ve been there, done that and it no longer gives us a rush. We are ready to move on to our next infatuation and begin the cycle once again.
